The term “compelled speech” is often used to refer to the use of pronouns and sometimes the name that you would normally use to refer to a trans person. The term is used to imply that the use of pronouns, their legal name or recognising someone has transitioned at all, is a form of coercion and in some way an unreasonable imposition on the speaker.
When in reality deliberately misgendering or refusing to use a person’s name is a very basic form of bullying directed against anyone and is a form of harassment. It is not a form of “compelled speech” to ask people to treat others with respect and dignity.
Trans people are more likely to be deliberately targeted this way and will be more effected by this type of harassment and bullying, than someone who is cis who is rarely misgendered accidentally. To suggest otherwise can also be part of this type of bullying.
With anti-trans proponents, this form of harassment towards trans people has been reframed as a form of “free speech” and “compelled speech” to imply that the person being harassed is the one who is in the wrong. This is a false equivalence and a form of gaslighting.
