Cis Is a Slur

Cis Is a Slur

Cisgender or cis is a term that means someone who identifies with the gender they were assigned at birth, in contrast to being transgender.

Objections to the term cisgender come in two forms.

The first objection is reminiscent of homophobic objections to the term “straight,” where critics argue that the term cisgender is unnecessary because they consider themselves to be normal, not cisgender.

The second objection is often framed in feminist terms, suggesting that categorising women as cisgender diminishes their significance. However, it is not explained why using subsets or categories is problematic or detrimental to women.

Another common refrain is that cisgender women do not truly identify as women. However, this objection does not withstand scrutiny, as many “Gender Critical” women strongly identify with the term woman.

Examples
  • Cis is a slur. I am not a subset of my own sex because males want to be like me.
  • 1. Cis is a slur because it attempts to make women a subgroup in our own category (women) to make room for men who pretend they are women.
    2. You people want us to respect made up trans identities but don’t want to respect women’s identity.
    3. It is IMPOSSIBLE to assign sex.
  • Cis is a slur. It coerces females into identifying with oppressive gender stereotypes. No. Not going to happen. Stop imposing this on us.
  • Cis *is* a slur and *if* you expect any of us to pay attention to your ridiculous pronoun playacting, you will stop using it- otherwise you don't get to complain when I use the correct sex-based language.
